Although tourism development in Namibia's south-eastern region slowed down in 1990 following the closure of the Mata Mata gate leading into South Africa's Kalahari Gemsbok Park, it is nevertheless an area well worth visiting to experience the magnificent red dunes of the Kalahari and meet its traditional inhabitants, the Bushmen (as they are most commonly referred to in Namibia), or San people. Negotiations between Namibia, South Africa and Botswana to establish a trans- frontier conservation area in line with the Peace Park concept are currently under- way. One of the objectives is the reopening of the Mata Mata border post, possibly with the condition that it is to be used by tourists only, so as to protect the desert environment from heavy vehicles and commercial traffic.
